New, upgraded Literature Search System

The Micro-Cares(tm) Literature Search System (WINLS), a member of the Micro-Cares(tm) software family, is a powerful stand alone or multi-user system for the collection, annotation, storage, and retrieval of medical bibliographic citations. This software system permits the development of bibliographical references, abstracts, edited commentaries, cross references among citations, and the organization into meaningful lists of references which are of critical importance to the user. For example, one can construct a list of references on any topic desired, place those references together, and retrieve them as a group when needed. This can be on a disease, e.g., depression in the medically ill; on a research interest; on an area of teaching; on a division, department, or institutional list of published papers; on faculty curriculum vitae; on a collaboration among hospitals (universities); or on the collected papers of a city, country, or an organization. The WINLS system provides a mechanism to collect, organize, collate, annotate, and retrieve in an expeditious manner references to suit the needs of a company, institution, division, or individual.

Micro-Cares(tm) WINLS operates in conjunction with, but on a different conceptual framework than the commonly employed literature search systems: e.g., Medline, Psychological Abstracts, etc. It provides a mechanism to generate select lists of carefully acquired citations with extreme relevance for the user. In the Sciences, where 6000 - 7000 papers are published every day, methods are needed to capture, regroup, and customize the information which is encountered. WINLS attempts to help professionals in this task by providing such a method for storing and organizing their data. As an example, with regards to AIDS, 20,000 references were perused to select approximately 100 that were eventually chosen to comprise the AIDS list incorporated into WINLS for consultation-liaison psychiatry. Similarly, expert selected papers on cancer from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York City, New York) stem from hundreds published every year. Using other methods such as a Medline search to find articles on a topic such as "cancer and psychological" yield hundreds of abstracts which are of low utility or inappropriately classified.

The Palm OS handheld version is currently available and has the same database of over 3800 articles condensed for use on the Palm.   Currently, it exists as a "standalone" program, but an interface module between the desktop and the Palm is anticipated for May 2005.
