LOCATION: Nikko Hotel, Monterrey Room, Mason Street , San Francisco , California

LUNCH: To be provided.

EQUIPMENT: Laptops and PalmPilots with cradles to Hotsync Palmpilot data into laptops.

TOPICS:

1)      INTRODUCTION of Attendees.

2)      PALM PERSONAL DATA ASSISTANT ("PDA")  demonstration and distribution CDs to allow the transfer of data from the PalmPilot to the archive computer.  Using the PalmPilot as the data collection tool will enhance the utility of MICROCARES since the data collection hardware will cost about $200 per user.  This means that multiple consultants at a single institution can all have data collection devices and only the need for one computer.  The downloading of data from the PalmPilot to the office computer, the production of reports, e.g., medical chart notes, physician’s patient profiles, letters to referring physicians, or to third party payers, and the ad hoc analysis of data from multiple files will be demonstrated.  And, with an infra red printer some reports can be printed directly from the PalmPilot at the nurses’ station to be placed in the patient’s medical chart.

3)      LITERATURE DATABASE and the 2003 update will be discussed and demonstrated.  There have been several enhancements to the Literature Search software, including the capacity to print lists, abstracts, and commentaries in WORD.  The Literature Database can be examined at the same time the clinical information system is open, allow the users to peruse essential literature and print citations, abstracts, commentaries without opening a separate program.  Literature databases have been contributed by Australia and New Zealand (Graeme Smith), Brazil (Paulo Zimmermann, Renerio Fraguas), Greek (Nicholas Tsopolas), Mexico (Luis Ruiz Flores), Portugal (Serafim Carvalho), and Taiwan (Niem Mu Chiu).  There national lists will be published with the 2003 update in the Journal – General Hospital Psychiatry – in September 2003.

4)      LANGUAGE CONVERSION is now possible with translating 1100 words in and EXCEL spread sheet.  With CISCL VERSION  7.2 which is programmed in Visual Basic 6, it is possible to switch from one language to another.  It is anticipated there will be a German and Greek MICROCARES            version during 2003 to accompany the Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, and English versions currently available.

5)      DRUG – DRUG INTERACTIONS COMPONENT will be added to the MICROCARES system during 2003.  This will permit within the CISCL program to examine drug – drug interactions while entering clinical patient data.  An important component of this enhancement is to examine the interaction potential from the administration of psychotropic medications with other medical drugs.  Further comparison with epocrates and the APA system – Interact will be explored.

6)      METHODS to extract data from MICROCARES data sets and from multiple users will be presented. An example of demonstrating data from one of the first collaborative studies from Mexico will be shown. (Data presented from the National Medical Center, Mexico City, DF, Mexico from Dr. Luis Ruiz Flores).   Dr. Niem Mu Chiu, Dr. David Sun, and colleagues have completed an epidemiological study of consultations in their teaching hospital.  This is a first formal database study in C-L psychiatry in Taiwan , and with the Mandarin Version.

7)      COLLABORATIVE STUDIES will be reviewed: 1) within an institution; 2) among institutions; 3) between cities, countries, regions; 3) educational studies (how are trainees performing? Number of cases, number of follow-up visits, range of diagnoses, range of treatments, e.g., the frequency of using psychotropic agents, versus non psychiatric drug treatment, etc.  It is anticipated the members of the group will contribute to ideas, especially database studies in developing countries to bench mark psychiatric consultation characteristics in these nations.

8)      FUTURE GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR MICROCARES: CISCL AND LITERATURE DATABASE.  The attached Microsoft Power Point Presentation presented at the American Association for Technology in Psychiatry (ATTP) provides a summary of where MICROCARES VERSION 7.2 currently stands, and the enhancements proposed in the upcoming year.  This summary slide presentation is available from Jim_Strain@hotmail.com or on our website: www. microcares.com The hardware and software functional requirements to run the MICROCARES operating system is described, and the additional enhancements required to enable the use of the PalmPilot (PDA).
